Gift Wrap Instructions

Need a simple gift wrap idea for all those Birthday Party invites?  When my kids were young, it seemed like we had a birthday party in need of a gift every other weekend. So I needed a DIY gift wrap idea that did not take a lot of extra time. This gift wrapped like a birthday cake gift box turned out to be the perfect solution. I picked up a few of the round paper mache gift boxes to keep with my craft supplies, along with paint, paper straws and tissue paper. All the ingredients for this creative gift wrap idea.

Skip the gift bag and go big. Or small in this case.  They say the best things come in small packages and I couldn’t agree more. This creative gift wrap for small gifts, whatever they may be, is sure to get rave reviews.

I started with a small round paper mache gift box that I picked up at my local craft store, and painted it with pink acrylic craft paint. I just used a small foam paint brush, put a couple of coats of paint on the entire gift box and lid, and let it dry.

Then I measured out a length of the mini fringe tissue garland to go around both the top and bottom circumference of the box. You could make the tissue paper garland yourself or buy it ready-made. Then as shown, I hot glued one length to the top around the edge, and one length to the bottom around the edge. This won’t take much time at all. Just be sure and let everything dry.

The candles are made of paper straws and tissue paper. My gift box measured about 4 inches high so I cut my straws to measure 3 inches – or about ¾ the height of my box. Then I cut a 3-inch long by ½-inch high strip of yellow tissue paper.

Before I rolled the tissue paper to resemble a flame, I cut the top long edge with some pinking scissors, just to give it a bit of a jagged edge. Then I rolled it up and stuck it into the top of the straw – resembling a flame. That’s it. I didn’t even glue it, but you could put a dab of hot glue on the bottom edge if you were worried it would fall out.

You could do this for a birthday girl or boy. It’s the perfect way to say Happy Birthday! Instead of pink, paint the gift box a bright white and add some multicolor tissue fringe garland. Or opt for their favorite color to add a personal touch.  Nestle the gift in a bunch of confetti hidden inside the gift box. What kid wouldn’t love that?

This DIY gift wrap idea would make for a unique gift or favor idea for baby showers. Paint a bunch of small round gift boxes yellow and add confetti inside to match the sex of the baby. A darling gender reveal idea!  This really is a blank canvas – only limited by your own style. And the best part? It makes wrapping a birthday gift (or Christmas gifts) a piece of cake!
