Instructions for Greeting Cards and Tags

Have some wrapping paper scraps that are too small to wrap a gift in? This is the DIY for you. Use those scraps to make greeting cards that are out of the ordinary for that special birthday party.  Craft a party hat or a row of candles using nothing but those scraps of wrapping paper. This is a clever way to wrap up that perfect gift.

Party Hat Greeting Card

This card starts with a piece of wrapping paper folded into a cone shape to resemble a party hat. This was a little trickier than I anticipated because not just any shape folds into a perfect little cone. You will need to cut a triangle with one long side and two shorter sides of the same length. Then simply roll the shape into a cone, hot glue it in place, and trim the bottom straight across. Next, take a short strip of tissue paper and cut the bottom fringe style, and hot glue it inside the bottom of the paper cone so it just barely peaks out as shown.  Lastly, I glued a small bright pom pom to the top of the paper cone. Once all the glue was dry I glued the entire Party Hat to the center front of the card and added a stamped greeting to the bottom.

Birthday Candles Greeting Card

Starting with a blank white folded card I gathered five different scraps of wrapping paper that I thought looked fun together. I cut them each into 4-inch by 1.5-inch rectangular pieces then rolled each into a paper straw shape and glued the long edges together. Next, I cut a short length of twine and glued one in each candle shape to resemble a candle wick. Once the glue has dried on your faux candles you can arrange them on the front of the card and hot glue them in place. I stamped a greeting on the bottom as well. So cute and so creative!

Birthday Cake Gift Tag

This gift tag doesn’t use scraps of paper but I included it anyway. It is made using just blank white gift tags and craft paint. I started with three different colors of pink craft paint and an ½ inch paintbrush. I dispensed a little of each color of paint onto a piece of wax paper and added some water to each color – to thin them out a bit. Then I painted the layers as shown, starting with the darkest color at the bottom and ending with the lightest color at the top. I added three hand-drawn candles to the top of the cake and a stamped greeting at the bottom of the gift tag. Simple and sweet! Just pop it on the top of the box!

This is an easy but creative way to add a personal touch to any birthday gift. Greeting cards and tags using wrapping paper are one of my favorite gift wrapping ideas.
